Build character, not CAP

—
Before uni started, I was talking to a good friend from Arts camp one night. Like geeky students who had been deprived education so long (him, because of his nation-serving stint and me, because I took a break), we were looking at possible modules to take on and the two of us were two kids in a candy store over the prospect of learning again.
There were a few modules we chanced upon that immediately brought to mind the thought, oh man this sounds tough but both said we would do it anyway. I expressed it perfectly when I told him, “It’s one of those modules you take to build character, not CAP” and he immediately understood and agreed. That is when I knew I found another one of my kind of people.
It seems timely that I recall that moment now because there are certain modules that I’m struggling to grasp this semester — and yet these are the modules that I have so much love for because of how much I learn in lectures. They help me remember why I love learning. I need to remember what I told my friend, recite it as a daily mantra, whatever. This sense of knowing what matters, even if it doesn’t fall in line with societal standards, is slightly depressing yet ultimately liberating.
